Moser 111 Ultegra Road Bike Review

The Moser 111 Ultegra Road Bike Is Sold As An “Enthusiast’s Road Bike” But Do Riders Agree?

Moser Bikes 111 Ultegra

According to the designers of the Moser 111 Ultegra Road Bike, this product was based on “an Italian marque with strong racing roots” and this is clear from the bike’s sense of style and the range of top features, including the – carbon fibre monocoque frame, Fulcrum Racing Sport (R7) clincher wheels and Vittoria Zaffiro tyres.

Moser also offer the idea that this is simply an “enthusiast’s road bike”, which is perhaps little more than a rather non-descriptive way of suggesting that it is a fairly standard bike for all occasions that experienced riders will love. Is this the case or are these enthusiasts looking elsewhere?

What advantages have riders highlighted in their reviews for this Moser 111 Ultegra Bike?

One of the elements of this Moser road bike that buyers seem to really love, one which also sets it apart from some other bikes in the price range, is that it is so responsive and has a level of handling that goes beyond the rider’s expectations.

The reason for this impressive performance can be split between three components that all come in for high praise: the gear shifting and braking are smooth and precise thanks to the Shimano’s Ultegra 10 speed shifter, a feature Moser claim is“confidence inspiring – even in poor conditions”.

The chain set makes short work of hilly terrains and even the pedals are praised for the lack of effort needed, with users feeling that there is no wasted effort and every movement seems to count.

Going back to the idea that this is simply a standard, all-purpose road bike for enthusiasts rather than a specialist bike with specific benefits, the online feedback shows that the bike has great potential in different areas.

Some talk about the reliability of the bike on the daily commute, others highlight the speeds that can be maintained in sportier environments and other simply mention the value for money that this model provides, especially compared to others on the market that have similar components yet a heftier price tag.

In fact, those that are using the bike as a sporty racing bike have reported significantly faster personal bests after switching to this Moser road bike. Add to this the fact that it is also very comfortable, even over the bumpiest terrains, and it really does sound like a bike that can do it all.

Does this Moser 111 Ultegra Road Bike have any downsides that could lessen its appeal to new riders?

What is interesting about this bike is that even though there is a lot of talk in the product description about the eye-catching Italian style and the way that this is an attractive model as much as a great racing bike, the most frequently mentioned criticism relates to the aesthetics rather than the performance.

Moser have highlighted the “understated matt/glossy unidirectional carbon finish” as one of the many features that are supposed to put this bike ahead of the competition; however, buyers are less than impressed with the actual finish on the merchandise they have received and the lack of colour choices.

They claim that not only is the look completely dull, with no sign of the shiny, glossy finish they were after, this matt black paintwork often appears to be quite patchy on closer inspection, often with areas of discolouration.

Thankfully, even though this seems to be an unavoidable flaw that buyers will have to put up with, this seems to be the only area that really comes under fire in user reviews.

Summary: does this undesirable finish stop the Moser 111 Ultegra from being a highly recommendable purchase?

While the problems with the patchy, matt finish do imply a lack of care and poor attention to detail and have been mentioned fairly often, it would be a pretty superficial reason for changing the verdict of this review from a positive one to a negative one – especially when you have to get so close to the frame to even notice.

With this issue to one side, buyers are left with a bike that retains the sense of Italian style it was most likely bought for, has a number of key advantages in its arsenal, such as fantastic handling and high quality components, and is just as well-loved by speed-freaks as general commuters. Because of this, the Moser bike is indeed easily recommended to the wide range of cycling enthusiasts that Moser are hoping to attract.

Hi. The reason this is from a ‘Marque of strong Italian racing routes’ is because this bike has the backing of the
Great Francesco Moser and wears his name.
I have a 111 Dura-Ace and having had the pleasure
of having a hosted dinner, riding and having my 111
personally signed by the great man who is also
my idol from the 80’s, this bike is nothing more than
superb. The paintwork as described is not as bad as
reviewers make out, it’s just thin paint and not your
shiny run of the mill Giant/Specialised/Trek boring
mass produced bike. I also have a 666 with full
Campag Record which is fricken awesome. Buy
One if you can, they are like gold dust and very
    Specialist.
